The Sexual and Reproductive Health Profiles have been developed by Public Health England (PHE) to support local authorities, public health leads and other interested parties to monitor the sexual and reproductive health of their population and the contribution of local public health related systems.
The profiles are presented as interactive maps, charts and tables that provide a snapshot of sexual and reproductive health across a range of topics including teenage pregnancy, abortions, contraception, HIV, sexually transmitted infections and sexual offences. Wider influences on sexual health such as alcohol use, and other topics particularly relating to teenage conceptions such as education and deprivation level, are also included.
To accompany this tool, further data and advice can be found in PHE’s HIV, sexual health and teenage pregnancy resources, HIV & STI web portal (restricted access), commissioning guidance, guide to local data and other useful links.
More about the Profiles
The data is grouped into six domains: Key Indicators; HIV and STIs; Reproductive Health; Teenage Pregnancy; Wider Determinants of Health; All Indicators. The Key Indicators provide a summary overview of sexual and reproductive health and include those in the Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF).
Geographic breakdowns include: local authority (upper and/or lower tier), England, region (former ‘Government Office Region’), PHE Centre, ONS cluster group (type of area – lower tier only) and deprivation decile (upper tier local authorities grouped into 10 levels of deprivation).
How to use the tool
Select local authority area type ‘County & UA’ (upper tier) or ‘District and UA’ (lower tier) from the drop down box to view available indicators. The tool allows you to:
Group and compare your local authority against other authorities
Benchmark your local authority against the England average
Group and benchmark your local authority against the average by PHE Centre, region, ONS cluster group or deprivation decile
View trend data – you can view all indicator trends for your local authority or all local authority trends for a single indicator on the same screen
View indicator definitions – these include further background information on each indicator to help with interpretation
You can also download the underlying data to an Excel file. Select by local authority area type and by group of choice or England as a whole.
The tool has been developed using the Fingertips web tool. More information about using Fingertips is available in video tutorials and a user guide.
The range of indicators and their presentation will be extended as further data sources and software functionality become available. An outline calendar of planned indicator updates is available here. Planned tool developments in 2014 include enabling you to generate a simple ‘pdf’ report output of the data presentations.
